When does hospice care start?

Hospice care begins the moment a referral opens the door to comfort only measures. From that first whisper of need, our team moves with tenderness and intention. Whenever it aligns with the patient’s strength and the family’s / facility's rhythm, a Primrose Hospice representative will come to assess and evaluate, arriving softly, with compassion and calm. The Hospice Medical Director or Physician will certify the eligibility and most often, the full embrace of hospice begins within a day or two,

What hours of the day is hospice open?

Even when the office lights have dimmed for the day, hospice care never sleeps. Hospice is available ‘on-call’ after the administrative office has closed and support is available around the clock—every hour, every day of the week—so comfort is always within reach.

Our nurses stand ready with gentle steadiness, prepared to respond within minutes whenever a need arises. No matter the hour, you are never alone on this journey.

How does hospice work to keep someone comfortable?

As illness progresses, patients may experience pain or other difficult symptoms. Our hospice team is specially trained to bring comfort, ease distress, and provide a sanctuary of support for both body and spirit. We work closely with each patient’s physician to ensure medications, therapies, and treatments align with their personal care goals. The care plan is reviewed often, adapting gently as needs change utilizing hospice tools and ways to measure how comfortable the patient is.

Who pays for Hospice services?

The Medicare Hospice Benefit pays for nearly all hospice care in the U.S.

If a patient: Is enrolled in Medicare Part A, has a physician (and hospice medical director) certify a life expectancy of 6 months or less if the illness runs its normal course and chooses comfort-focused care rather than curative treatment. In addition, Medicaid, Private Insurance and VA plans also include a hospice benefit—so most patients and families pay little to nothing out of pocket even if they are non-Medicare.

What does the Hospice benefit cover?

Hospice is an all-inclusive benefit, meaning payment covers:

  • Physician and nursing care
  • Medications related to the terminal illness
  • Medical equipment (hospital bed, oxygen, wheelchair, etc.)
  • Hospice aides, social work, chaplain services
  • 24/7 on-call support
  • Short-term inpatient care and respite care
  • Bereavement support for the family (up to 13 months)

Primrose Hospice goes BEYOND:

In addition to the hospice benefit coverage, Primrose Hospice goes above and beyond in also providing for incontinence supplies, as well as specialty care programs for a holistic human approach where the patient and family can rest in the loving hands of a sanctuary of comfort & care.
